Creating a ‘ready for production’ prototype

Acuity is a major leader in the global lighting industry. They have their own manufacturing team based in the US, so they needed Carallon to design a product to working prototype stage and create comprehensive documentation to facilitate third party production.

Challenge:

To design and manufacture a prototype of a new DMX lighting controller that would seamlessly integrate two existing systems—Acuity’s proprietary nLight system and a third-party ecosystem. The goal was to simplify the programming of both dynamic and static lighting systems through a single bridging device.

Expertise Provided

By working closely with the client, we co-created a detailed specification document and technical viability questionnaire to ensure all requirements were captured. Our strategy focused on:

  • Protocol bridging & firmware development
  • Iterative prototyping to test compatibility, replicability and performance
  • Creating comprehensive documentation to facilitate third party production

We delivered a fully functional prototype along with a complete technical pack for manufacturing. Success was measured by:

  • Technical validation across both existing systems
  • Successful handover for manufacture and replication without deviation

 

Acuity launched the product, branded Animate™  and part of their nLight range, at a trade show in 2025.
